The gentleman standing beside me with his horse, Paddy, (above c. 2014) is the same “jarvey” who is driving my mother’s cousins from Wisconsin (below) through the picturesque Killarney National Park c.1960 in jaunting car #21. Sadly Mick McCarty retired last year—that is the end of a beloved era.
Looking for a cultural travel experience—
you’ve come to the right place!
My love of Ireland was instilled in me by my grandparents, who were born in Ireland and emigrated to the US right after the Irish Civil War in the early 1920’s. I was told once that I have a “soul-level desire” to live in Ireland, and although I’ve never been able to make that happen, Bridie’s tours certainly quench that desire two weeks at a time on an annual basis! With an abiding love for this beautiful country, not to mention the wit and charm of her people, I am always happy to return and introduce another group, who are feeling the “ancestral tug”, to this fabulous place.
And that would be why my travel style does not include rushing around Ireland - so we can “see it all” with a pint in one hand, and a shamrock in the other! And to keep the pace on a leisurely level, we stay two or three nights in every hotel. Now don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy Guinness, but I go to the pub for the music! Everywhere you go in Ireland, there is art, Celtic design, music, poetry, literature and so much natural beauty. It’s hard to describe but picture something as industrial as a manhole cover—knotwork designs on every one! It is my wish is to share the best of the real IreIand - the music & dance, literature, poetry, history and all that gorgeous scenery—with each of you.
Bridie’s tours are filled with joyful visits like jaunting car rides in Killarney or a pony & trap on the Aran Islands, kissing the Blarney Stone—or visiting the vast castle parkland and gardens that surround it —looking down from the Cliffs of Moher, or up at a beautiful mountain, and the ocean is everywhere we go! I always strive to provide an evening of music and dance, the most quintessential part of Irish culture.
AND— I also want to share a more in-depth view of Ireland than simple site-seeing, and that’s why Bridie’s itineraries also include visits to places like the award winning Irish National Famine Museum at Strokestown, and the Portumna Workhouse, such a deeply emotional part of Irish history and culture.
Together we will find the balance that creates an exhilerating tour of Ireland filled with Irish heritage of all kinds. If this is your preferred travel style, I look forward to welcoming you as my guest on a leisurely sojourn across Ireland one day soon!
